Lectionary Model

The Lectionary curriculum model follows stories in the Revised Common Lectionary. Throughout the three-year cycle, each lesson comes from a Bible story in the Old Testament, the Gospels, or Acts that kids will hear during worship.

This model is designed for classroom use and works best for congregations who are looking for a curriculum that connects readings from worship with Sunday school.

Life as a Lectionary curriculum leader:

“I am a new member in my congregation and I have volunteered to teach Sunday school for the first time. My church uses the lectionary in planning worship and wants to extend that into Sunday school.  I’m excited about that, but how do I introduce the lectionary into our program in a way my students will understand? How does Spark help me?"

  • Spark follows the Revised Common Lectionary, meaning that each story lesson comes from a Bible story in the Old Testament, the Gospel readings, or Acts that kids will hear during worship.
  •

  • Spark welcomes first-time teachers and volunteers! Your commitment to faith formation is invaluable. Spark lesson preparation videos make teaching easy—breaking down the Bible lesson, offering insights and real-life applications to share with your kids—all in five minutes or less. A perfect way to prepare when you have time—the night before or even 10 minutes before your lesson!
  •

  • The age appropriate classroom leaflets offer interactive content that engages kids in the Bible story. Each leaflet also includes a "Faith at Home" activity to encourage faith discussion at home.

Scope and Sequence:

Spark Lectionary covers the 3-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. Each week the Bible story comes from the Old Testament, the Gospels, or Acts.

The Revised Common Lectionary is divided into three annual cycles of readings.

  • In year A the gospel readings come primarily from Matthew.
  • In year B the gospel readings come primarily from Mark.
  • In year C the gospel readings come primarily from Luke.
  • The Gospel of John is used in all three years.

Each cycle begins on the First Sunday in Advent and continues throughout the final Sunday, Christ the King.
